                                                          Answer any five questions

1. a) Give the advantages of organizing a large volume of data as a database.
    b) Give the components of a DBMS and outline their roles.
    c) Briefly explain the idea of data independence.
    d) " Data Dictionary is structured repository of data about data". Explain.

2. a) What are the main functions of a database administrator?
    b) Explain and concepts of aggregation and generalization and example in each case.

3. a) Define and illustrate the relational algebra operators. Union set difference, selection and projection.
    b) Explain loss less-join decomposition and the idea of dependency reservation.

4. Normalization theory is built around the concept of normal forms. A relative is said to be in particular normal form if it satisfies a certain specified set of constraints. Discuss various normal forms giving example.

5. Explain following:
   a) Serializability
   b) Two-phase licking protocol
   c) Deadlock

6. a) Define mapping cardinalities and  existence dependencies and explain withe example.
    b) Draw E-R diagram for the following education database
         Course (Course #, title)
         offering (Course#, off, off data, location)
         Teacher( Course#, off, emp#, grade)
         Employee (emp#, ename, job)

7. a) Discuss HSAM, HISAM, HDAM and  HIDAM
    b) State and explain Armstrongs axioms.

8. a) Give the structure and concept of network database.
    b) Explain how can the security be maintained in a database system.

9. a) Explain the recovery procedure that needs to take place after a disk crash.
    b) Give an algorithm for testing dependency preservation.
