                                                              Answer any five questions.

1. (a) What are some of the factors that determine whether a communication system is LAN, MAN or WAN?
    (b) Give the formula that finds the number of cable links necessary for a mesh network topology.

2. (a) Discuss the five major components of a data communication system.
    (b) What are the various factors that affect the reliability of  a network?

3. (a) Why is synchronization is a problem in data communication system.
    (b) If the bit rate of a signal is 1000 bits / second, how many bits can be sent in 5 seconds, how many bits in 1/5 seconds, how many bits in 100 miliseconds?

4. What are the two types of TDM implementations and how do they differ  from each other? In which situation FDM  is better than TDM? How?

5. (a) Compare mechanism of a space division switch to mechanism of a time- division switch.
    (b) How many cross points are needed if we use a crossbar switch to connect 1000 telephones in a small town?

6. Briefly discuss various layers of OSI reference model with their applications.

7. (a) Define & explain the data link layer in IEEE project 802. Why is this layer divided into sublayers?
    (b) Suppose there is heavy traffic on both a CSMA / CD  LAN  and a Token Ring LAN. On which system a station is more likely to wait longer to send a frame? Why ?

8. (a) What are the advantages of FDDI over a basic Token Ring?
    (b) A message is broken up into three pieces. Discuss the transmission of the packets using the datagram approach to packet switching.

9. (a) Differentiate between a physical address and a logical address.
    (b) Given an IP  address in decimal dotted notation, how can its class be determined?

10. Write short notes on any two of the following:
      (a) Distributed Queue Dual Bus
      (b) TCP/IP
      (c) Network Operating system
      (d) ISDN
