                                                              Answer any five questions.


(1). What do you mean by operating system? List the various functions of an Operating system and explain in detail.

(2). What do you mean by process? Discuss various process states and their meanings. Draw the process diagram.

(3). Discuss the Round Robin scheduling policy with its merits and demerits. What is the impact of the quantum of time slice on the system performance?

(4). Why should page - replacement be performed? Compare FIFO  optimal and LRU page replacement algorithms with example.

(5). What do you mean by the term critical - regional and Mutual Exclusion? Discuss the concept of mutual exclusion primitives and different way of implementing them.

(6). What is deadlock? Discuss two ways in which the O/S can recover from a deadlock. Also explain their merits and demerits.

(7). What are three- major activities of an operating system in regard to the file management?

(8). Why performance measure and evaluation are needed? Discuss various performance evaluation.

(9). Differentiate between any two of the following:
       (i). Preemptive and Mon- Preemptive Scheduling
       (ii). Threads and processing
       (iii). Direct mapping and Associative mapping
       (iv). Paging and demand paging

(10). Write short notes on any three of the followings:-
         (i). Types of O/S
         (ii). Virtual memory
         (iii). Queuing
         (iv). Direct Memory Access (DMS)
         (v).  Bottlenecks and saturation
